Xanview co-founder: “What we’re doing is three years ahead of the security/video surveillance market”
Xanview, a video surveillance and security software that offers a cost effective, time-efficient and easy-to-use solution for site monitoring, tied for second place in both the audience and judges’ vote at TechPitch 4.5 on 11 May 2016. We caught up with CMO and co-founder Regina Schmerlin to hear about Xanview’s unique business proposition, its plans for the future, and how the TechPitch 4.5 experience has impacted the company’s business goals.
–Thanks for taking the time to talk with us today, Regina. Can you tell us your professional story and how you arrived as co-founder of Xanview?
I am one of those multi-faceted people, I guess – I trained in economics and finance, but always did math and art on the side as well. Figuring out what I wanted to do for a career was a nightmare because I enjoy many things; I ended up in investment management because I got to work with some very driven and intelligent people, and it paid the bills. But even though it enabled a nice lifestyle, I never felt entirely fulfilled or engrossed with what I was doing. Some people go to work and are happy to do a decent job and go home, but I need to be 1000% engrossed in every moment of my life, whether it’s work or personal.
While I was working in investment management I started going to entrepreneurial events and following different blogs and start-ups. I felt a real connection with the entrepreneurial mindset and with people who are driven, determined, and pave their own way. Around that time I met my friend Roman, who was creating a surveillance program for a member of his family, simply because he didn’t like the ones saw on the market. He felt other security products wasted a lot of administrative costs on installation and maintenance, took a lot of time to review and find past footage, and were difficult to access remotely when monitoring several locations.
So he decided to build his own.
Roman’s background in full-stack software development and network management gave him the foundation to create an entirely different approach to video surveillance. Then word got out and others started asking him for something similar, and that’s how Xanview was born.
–What is it about Xanview that makes it so different from other surveillance products on the market?
The feedback we get is that what we’re doing is groundbreaking and revolutionary, at least three years ahead of what’s on the market. Using cloud video surveillance makes our solution most cost effective; users can access multiple locations from a single login remotely, and review hours of video in seconds. Over 80% of our users watch access their system every day. A minute or two is all they need to be aware. This is a sharp contrast to most video surveillance users who access their systems only when an incident occurs. Sadly what often happens is that they discover that their system stopped working months ago and did not record their footage. This does not happen with our system. In fact most of our users say that they use it as a management tool, not just for video surveillance.
-Can you really get a sense of a day’s activities in just a few seconds?
Absolutely. A commercial user recently logged in to check what had happened on his premises that day and saw a group of employees gathered in a circle. He found out they were conspiring to come back to the site and steal. The fact that he was able to easily see that such an unusual activity had occurred meant that he prevented this theft from happening.
And it’s groundbreaking for residential use as well. For example, you can be sent an alert if somebody is at your front door, or if your alarm goes off. You can log-in immediately and see what’s happening. A residential user recently saw that someone was taking photographs of the locks on his doors. He sent the video to the police who confirmed that this person was a known burglar and used the video evidence to arrest him.
–Now that Xanview has evolved from a bespoke solution into a scalable security solution, what’s next?
We’re looking to expand and seeking large scale commercial partners, either security installers or to work on an OEM basis where manufacturers or a strategic partner could white label our product as their own. We’re also looking for investors to expand our operations.
-You did so well at TechPitch 4.5. How did you feel it went?
I thought it went well. Our product was voted most disruptive. A lot of people approached me during the networking portion of the event, including someone who wanted to invest, as well as a very large global tech company who invited me to their demo day.
-You have a unique view into the start-up scene in London and the UK. How do you rate it?
The London start-up scene is so vibrant. There’s a lot happening here, but the downside is that it can be easy to get lost in noise and hype. That’s why you have to be sure that your proposition is unique and essential. If you can do that, the rest is much easier.
