SoundLab wins Best SEND Resource award at the Music Teacher Awards For Excellence 2016
Heart n Soul are delighted to announce that our innovative digital music making project SoundLab won the Best SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) Resource award at the Music Teacher Awards For Excellence 2016 last night.
SoundLab explores ways of using cutting-edge technology to encourage people with learning disabilities to create sound and music experiences.
Held in Central London, the awards celebrates excellence in music and performing arts education from new products and resources to hubs, music departments and individual contributions to the sector.
Lilly Cook and Ashley Elsdon from the SoundLab team attended the evening. Lilly said: “It’s a brilliant feeling to know the work we’re doing is recognised and the more we’re spreading the word, the more popular it’s getting. I will do whatever SoundLab needs to help people in their journey making music.”
Other nominees in this category included Theremini (Moog) and Alphasphere, both of which we have used on the SoundLab project to further develop our work too.
Mark Williams, Artistic Director from Heart n Soul said: “We are thrilled to have the recognition of the Music Teacher Awards for Excellence Best SEND resource award for how our work at SoundLab is opening up and sharing the creative possibilities of new and emerging music technologies to become more connected and accessible for people with learning disabilities and as a result of that, for everyone.”

SoundLab is an innovative digital music making project which explores ways of using technology to encourage people with learning disabilities to create sound and music experiences. Partners in the original project were Unthinkable, Goldsmiths, University of London and Public Domain Corp. We have been holding a variety of sessions trying out new digital devices and apps to see what we do (and do not) like. We also take the project to a variety of Heart n Soul events encouraging others to take part and explore digital music making.
Heart n Soul is an award-winning creative arts company. We believe in the talents and power of people with learning disabilities. Our work is about art, taking part, training and sharing. We offer a range of opportunities for people to take part, train in a new skill or develop their artistic talents. People with and without learning disabilities go on a creative journey together. We also have a lot of fun.
