Inspiring Women in Innovation – Joyeeta Das of of Gyana
Editor’s Note: We pleased to share this guest post from our friends at Innovate UK. As the UK’s innovation agency, Innovate UK works with people, companies and partner organisations to find and drive the science and technology innovations that will grow the UK economy.
From time to time we take a look at what we call our ‘Game Changers’ series. This is where we shine a spotlight on those bold individuals who are shaping the industry and the world around us. This time, we’re looking at Joyeeta Das, an inspiring woman working in innovation. Joyeeta is the founder and CEO of Gyana, a start-up that uses big data and social media trends to form a unique search tool.
Who is Joyeeta Das?
Joyeeta Das trained as an engineer in India. She then worked at Cisco and later founded Anahata Life. She went on to complete an MBA at the University of Oxford, where she first nurtured the idea of Gyana. She has since been selected for two Innovate UK entrepreneur missions to the US.
What is Gyana?
Gyana is a unique information search company that seeks to bring AI and big data to consumers in an affordable and accessible way. Gyana integrates data from social media, traffic updates, weather and other places to pull together a perspective about any given place, including what is trending and even its emotional ‘vibe’. The more data that’s input, the more understanding of individual places and the wider world is achieved. It will ultimately help consumers, the government and businesses truly understand specific areas and demographics. The potential in this area is huge.
“It doesn’t matter how many books you read or how many people you talk to. You can’t learn something by correspondence. Yet the biggest thing that no one really tells you is that it’s an emotional and psychological rollercoaster. It completely challenges your self-confidence and emotional cushions. Remember – it’s not just you, you’re taking a lot of people on this journey with you and they have risked a lot to come along with you. My advice would be… You won’t be the best thing since sliced bread, ever. There’s obviously someone better than you… that’s not the point. You don’t have to be the best, you just have to get through today.”
Why is Joyeeta So Inspiring?
Joyeeta has always held an unwavering belief in her company. Her enthusiasm for innovation and technology infects those around her and spurs her team into working tirelessly to develop something unique. There have been tough times for her team, too. There was a period where employees worked without pay after a potential investor dropped out. Joyeeta sought new investment with tenacity and in January 2015 she secured funding. This was later followed by an additional £1.5 million in November 2015. By January 2016 the team had expanded to 15 members and by the July of this year her product was launched.
Joyeeta speaks highly of the power of networking and claims this was vital in achieving funding. With an enterprising and charismatic attitude, Joyeeta has managed to forge many beneficial connections and partnerships. She’s a firm believer of face-to-face communication in business and attributes much of her success to this. She is an advocate of networking and urges aspiring entrepreneurs to get out there and start talking to investors.
Joyeeta regularly offers help and support to aspiring female entrepreneurs. If you’re a businesswoman with exciting ideas, read about Innovate UK’s first women-only competition encouraging diversity in innovation.
